If you ever find yourself traveling near the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans, make sure you drop by the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. A stunning Louisiana aquarium, this is a place you surely won’t want to miss.

As an avid wildlife conservationist and a self-confessed budget traveler, I try to scout around the country for the best zoos and aquariums I can find. Since I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now, I’ve seen a lot of different aquariums in various states. When I took a trip to Louisiana recently, I admit that looking for an aquarium wasn’t really at the top of my list. I was there to experience all that the state is known for: good, old southern cooking; old-world charm and architecture; rambling plantations and tree-lined estates.

That’s why I was pleasantly surprised with what I found at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. There are a lot of things you can do and a lot of great exhibits you can see. In fact, just to whet your aquatic appetite just a little, here are some of the cool discoveries I found:

See what exotic creatures the Caribbean has underneath its pristine seas! Encounter creatures like porcupine puffers, bonnethead sharks and many, many more! Plus, you can even catch a glimpse of divers feeding the rays and fish in the tanks!

Feed a Sea Creature
Get a chance to feed a stingray, an otter or a penguin! This program is available daily. Check out the aquarium’s official website to see the schedules and fees.

Adventure Island
Embark on a wet and wild adventure and become an ocean explorer for a day! Get up close and personal with sea creatures (you can opt to touch and feed them) and be a king or queen of the seas for a day!
